This was a great experience for Matts, already to be selected with 110 of the best juniors in the world was an honour.
He arrived in Italy to ride on the circuit of Modena. Although he has ridden many times in Italy, he has never ridden there. It was an exciting moment to be handed the welcome package and bib with color and number on. The Red Bull crew were very nice and helpful and the event was extremely organised.
Matts was riding on the first day with 54 others, split into groups of 6. There was only 2 sessions to prove their abilities so Matts was happy after the first session that it seemed to go ok. They had media sessions and interviews throughout the day which he handled well. The afternoon session was not as good as in the morning and he didnt get the same feeling on the other bike. So he was disappointed. As they waited for the announcements to find out who went through to the last day he was very nervous. But he managed to get through and was very happy. This was already a very good achievement.
Wednesday was a rest day as the other half of the riders tried out. On the final day there were 50 riders for the 8 spots avaliable.
He rode well as did everyone, but didnt get selected. He was ready for this as its uncommon for riders at their first Rookie selection to get through.
We are very proud of him and hes already looking forward to next years! Now he knows what to expect when he gets there!!!
